100 Years Ago - The San Francisco Earthquake

At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906 the San Andreas fault gave way resulting in an earthquake of 8.7 magnitude. Some 28,000 buildings collapsed. Fires ensued and more than 3,000 people died. The homeless numbered some 200,000. Damage was estimated at 500 million 1906 dollars. The same quake today would cause damage of over $80 billion.

Most property insurance policies exclude earthquake - even in areas where the chance of quake is low. Earthquake is one of the most devastating causes of property loss for which most people have no insurance (flood and terrorism being the others).

To learn more about earthquakes in your area visit your state's geological survey web site - Google your state name along with, "geological survey."

Consider adding earthquake to your insurance, even if the chance of loss is low in your area. Get quotes from your insurer. You may be surprised at how inexpensive the coverage is. Quakes can occur even in areas of low risk. The 1755 earthquake that hit Boston caused 100 chimneys to fall. Boats in Boston Harbor were tossed about as if they had run aground. Imagine the damage a similar quake would cause today.
