Harassment Insurance

The need for employment related practices insurance has been well discussed. Employers are subject to legal action when they are accused by employees (or applicants for employment) of harassment, discrimination and other wrongful employment acts.

How about the legal ramifications of an employee who harasses a customer or an employee of a customer?

Some employment practices liability insurance companies are offering coverage for such third-party exposures. Coverage is usually offered at an additional premium.

There is a risk management angle to this as well. Review your employment handbook. Consider adding a line to your harassment prohibition to include harassment of third parties. Having a specific policy against such may help you in legal action. Include third party harassment in your training too.
